Online Marketing Strategy – Mindset is key

Mindset

When it comes to your online presence this part of the jigsaw is very important, the approach differs slightly depending on whether you are looking at this from an individual point of view or a company one.

A mindset is a set of assumptions, methods or beliefs that are so established that they can influence an individual or a group to accept specific ways of doing things. As we move through life we start to fall into a particular mindset, this is usually determined from childhood when we are indoctrinated into a specific ‘system’ which informs us that we have to go to Kindergarden, Pre-School, Play School, School, College and University. As an individual, many of us have the pre-conditioned mindset based on the education process we have been through. We need to go through this to fit into the ‘system’ that requires people to work within it. However, the question is, why do some people play by different rules, why is it there are Entrepreneurs who appear to come up with these amazing ideas and turn them into profitable businesses. Are they cleverer than you, have more knowledge than you, better than you?

Not at all, but they do think differently. One of the people that I have learnt a lot from regarding Financial Intelligence and mindset is Robert Kiyosaki – he came up with the Cashflow quadrant which demonstrates the difference between an employee and an entrepreneurial mindset. The right side of the quadrant being where you really want to be as an individual, especially if you are looking at setting up something for yourself. However, shifting across from the left hand side, where we have been indoctrinated to remain is not an easy task and requires in some cases, re-training of your mindset and the realization that there is in many cases another way of doing things.

From a company perspective, you need to be in the right mindset from the outset. It’s easier said than done, but it is a case of ‘There is no try, do or do not’. By ‘trying’ you are setting the whole exercise/project up to fail. When an organisation is looking at their online web presence, there has to be the mindset in place where change is acceptable and a good thing. The way that things have always been done are no longer working, so why would you keep doing it that way? Well in many cases, the mindset is so set in concrete in terms of how things should/have to be done, it’s very hard to see another way of doing it. This leads to the ‘try’ mentality where there is a fear of trying something different or unknown. So rather than investigating fully and testing if fully, companies ‘try’ various elements of the online jigsaw and inevitably fail. Unfortunately this then leads to all elements of the jigsaw (that you weren’t even aware of) get tarnished with the fail brush too. As with the individual, there has to be a company mindset shift to allow for the most effective activities to be undertaken to make sure that the various applicable pieces of the jigsaw are put in place.
